How dare you ask me to be friends after all that we have been through? 🍂 . . One of the biggest insults I can think of post-breakup is when someone asks me to be friends. I just think it’s a lack of respect and a way for that person to run scot free, as if they need a way to believe they did nothing wrong and “agreeing to be friends” is the way to do that. How many times have you heard this after a breakup? “Can we still be friends?” “I’ve realised I do like talking to you though, can’t we be friends?” It may work for some people—but let’s look at this objectively: READ THE ROOM. How is your now ex-partner handling the breakup? Are they upset? Crying? Shocked? If they are, it’s probably not a good idea to insult them further by asking to be friends. This is a shock to the system. When you spend months liking and loving someone and they suddenly hit you with a breakup and think it’s okay to ask about being friends, this is a lack of respect from them. Give the person a chance to process what you’ve said and get their thoughts together. Let’s be real, if the relationship was for a significant amount of time, you would need time to process no longer seeing them. You need space. And “being friends” means you can somehow erase what happened and walk around as if nothing went wrong. No. Allow them the courtesy of having space away from you, leave them be. Post-breakup, some boundaries need to be established. You need to allow space from each other because otherwise you run the risk of becoming this toxic relationship. Give it time. Assess whether this person is someone you would like to continue having as a friend, and whether your feelings can dissolve. Then, respectfully ask or reach out.
